The time is near to start booing our friends!! We’re looking forward to dropping treats off at their doors and ringing the doorbell. Last year, Peyton got quite sad when we would drop off the treats and not say hi, so this year, I’m prepared to tell her that we’re kind of acting like ghosts and we want to surprise our friends for Halloween. I’m hoping she’ll understand and think it’s even more fun doing it this way!
In the past we’ve made chocolate covered cookie sandwiches, Halloween candies and Halloween bark, but this year, we’re adding a new treat to the mix – monster marshmallow treats. These fluffy treats are topped with colored chocolate, googly eyes and all of the sprinkles. They were so fun to make with Peyton (this was our little activity to do together while Emory napped yesterday).
To make the faces, we used an icing pen that I bought at Target and it made it so much easier to give the monsters some attitude and sass. Peyton loved picking out the faces for each one.
This was such a fun activity and treat to make together, and if you’re strapped on time, just buy some of the packaged marshmallow treats and top them with chocolate. Although I will say, there’s nothing like the homemade version. I whipped these up in less than ten minutes and waited for them to harden for about an hour.
If you end up making these, don’t forget to tag #marinamakeseats! I hope you all have fun booing your friends!
Monster Marshmallow Treats
Makes 15 marshmallow treats
Ingredients
- Cooking spray
- 6 tablespoons of butter
- 16 oz of mini marshmallows
- 6 cups of rice cereal
- 2-2/12 cups of candy melts (any color is fun!)
- Googly eyes
- Halloween sprinkles
- Black icing pen
Directions
Grease a 9X13 baking dish with cooking spray.
Melt the butter in a large pot over medium-high heat. When butter is melted and starts to sizzle, add 2/3 of the marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from the heat.
Add rice cereal and remaining marshmallows to combine really well.
Place marshmallow mixture into the greased baking dish, pressing down to ensure all of the cereal sticks together. Let it sit and cool for 30 minutes to an hour. Cut into squares.
Place the candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl and melt them in 30 second intervals, stirring in between each interval until melted. Using a spatula, top each marshmallow treat with melted candy and spread it with a spatula.
Top each treat with sprinkles, googly eyes and draw the rest of the face on with a black icing pen. Let the marshmallow treats sit until the candy coating and icing has hardened.
